Have you seen what’s going on at Huff House?

Change is coming, but we think you’re going to like it.

It’s been a busy summer at the Huff House in preparation for another year. In addition to planning professional development workshops, deciding what food trucks to bring to campus, and organizing Career & Internship Expos, our office is also in the midst of adding new resources to better serve Rice, both within and beyond the hedges. While you may be tempted to stop reading now and say “and?” we implore you to make it to the end of this post because we’re telling you now, the opportunities for all students are growing— all you need to do is plug in.

RICElink: Powered by Handshake

Remember RICElink- the portal through which you could make appointments, apply for jobs, and sign up for interviews? Well, we broke up, ate some Ben & Jerry’s, and moved on to a more attractive platform. Meet our new squeeze— RICElink: Powered by Handshake. Handshake is a modern career management platform, helping the Center for Career Development to facilitate students’ career development. The new system will benefit students in several ways, making it much easier for students to:

· schedule career counseling appointments,

· search and apply for internships and full-time jobs,

· apply for on-campus interviews,

· find potential employers,

· and explore the myriad of career development opportunities available at Rice including career expos, information sessions, panels and workshops.

This new and more user-friendly platform will provide more precise – and useful – analytics of Rice students’ career development efforts and gives students an edge in professional situations such as salary negotiations, networking, and more. Imagine the two scenarios below:

  1. It’s happened. You’ve locked down an interview for your first job after college. You walk into your interviews, confident about negotiating your salary because you know what you’re worth and what the organization has given to those before you with similar experience and education. Handshake can provide salary ranges based on job location, function, experience level, AND what previous Rice grads from various majors have reported earning. Yeah, we’re pretty excited about it too.
  2. You’re sitting in your dorm room wondering what you’re going to do with your life. Your mom calls you again asking what your post-grad plans are and you have no idea. All seems lost.  You log on to Handshake, start typing the names of companies you might want to work for, and perusing the jobs in various industries you might want to work for and there it is— you’re qualified and they’re looking for students like you.

Handshake– making you as happy as a jumping Meryl Streep gif

We encourage students to sign into RICElink: Powered by Handshake here or on our homepage at www.ccd.rice.edu to update their profile, add a resume, and start searching through the employers on the site.

Owl Edge Experiences

If you’ve been around Rice for over a year, you may have heard of this little thing called the “Owl Edge Initiative” to help Rice students get the “Owl Edge” in their world-class professional development. Well, thanks to over 300 student participants and over 150 alumni participants, it’s about to get even bigger. The Center for Career Development and the Office of Alumni Relations are excited to bring you more Owl Edge Externships, more Owl Edge Internships, and to grow the Owl Edge Experience Fund to help you find and make your place in the world.

What are these Owl Edge Experiences?

  • Owl Edge Externships: One to five-day job shadowing experiences that provide students with an opportunity to connect with Rice alumni and friends to explore career options and gain a realistic perspective of an industry over Winter and Spring Breaks.
  • Owl Edge Internships: A multi-week experience hosted by members of the Rice community who provide invaluable opportunities for students to connect their academic learning with professional work and/or research.
  • Owl Edge Experience Fund: A limited amount of funding, generously donated from Rice alumni and friends, to provide qualified students with grants up to $5,000 to participate in an unpaid or underpaid summer experience. Basically, the CCD will do something similar to this if you’re selected to receive funding:

Maybe without the green outfit— we prefer navy or charcoal.

Be on the lookout in the CCD newsletter and on our website for more information about applying for these exciting opportunities!
