Making the Most of Your Winter Break

Are you ready for the winter break? Besides sleeping in until noon, hanging out with friends, catching up with family, or traveling, here are some things that you might want to do while you are on break for the holidays:

Networking

If you’re waiting to graduate before actively building your network, you’re waiting too long. The best time to establish your network is now! You could network in person with family friends, companies near home, and online through LinkedIn and Sallyportal.

Take advantage of LinkedIn and Sallyportal and reach out to alumni that you are interested in. This is a good opportunity to establish your network and prepare yourself for your career path.

Preparing for applying to internships/jobs

  • Make an appointment to see a counselor through RICELink: Powered by Handshake to get help with your resume, interviewing skills, job/internship search, or any other career-related concerns you have
  • Upload your resume onto RICELink: Powered by Handshake, and complete your profile
  • Search for jobs and internships using RICElink: Powered by Handshake, iNet, Indeed, LinkedIn Student Jobs, and other job posting sites
  • Explore some useful resources that you can access through RICELink: Powered by Handshake, such as Vault, What Can I Do With This Major, Glassdoor, Optimal Resume, etc.
  • Check the CCD website for a list of Spring 2017 events and mark your calendar to attend them

Do an externship

Owl Edge Externships are one-to five-day job shadow experiences that connect you with Rice alumni and friends to explore career options and gain a realistic perspective on post-grad opportunities. It is also a great opportunity to meet and connect with alumni! Make sure to apply before the deadline.

You can also arrange a job shadowing experience on your own.  Stop by the CCD for resources and advice on reaching out to an employer.

Are you ready for the winter break now? Enjoy your break and do some meaningful things. Making the most of your winter break will also make you feel more prepared for the next semester!
